2015: A Geeky Year for Movies

Forget about all the things we were promised to have in 2015 by Back to the Future. 2015 seems to be our year for the movies, us geeks and nerds, that is. I do hope that no one is insulted by my use of the terms geek and nerd. Those are badges that I wear proudly and mean no harm by them. Cinematically in the coming year, I think there’s something for each of us. We welcome several new tales, plus various tried and true installments on very popular franchises. A lot of the studios are still being very hush-hush about details on some of the films. I’ve gleaned what I can from different sources, and I now present the movies that will quicken the pulse of most any avid reader of Amazing Stories Mag.

I’ll start with the biggie.…

“For God’s sake let us sit upon the ground And tell sad stories about the death of kings.”

Richard 11, Act 3, Scene 2

queen_of_outer_space_poster_02Shakespeare knew how to entertain a crowd and teach history at the same time. His plays are rife with kings, queens, dukes, barons and various and sundry other royal personages. His plays reflected the times in which he lived, a time when monarchs still held sway over the direction of nations and the common folk had little or nothing to do with public policy. His dramas concerned themselves with the fate of emperors and empresses.

Today things are different. We live in a post monarchic world. Governmental systems are complex and varied and each nation has its own quirks of governance and politics. Our contemporary dramas reflect that.

sfs-flash-gordon-mingNow let’s think about science fiction. More specifically, let’s think about Space Opera.…

Meme Me Up, Scotty

I recently got to thinking about all the little posts that people put on Facebook and what others reply. Now, I have quite a few geeky friends, mostly from going to various cons over the last couple of years, and they will use memes to comment on each other’s posts. According to Wikipedia.org an Internet meme (MEEM) is an activity, concept, catchphrase or piece of media which spreads, often as mimicry, from person to person via the Internet. They may relate to various existing Internet cultures or subcultures, often created or spread on various websites. These are usually photos or drawings that have been altered and/or have a catchy, sarcastic, or meaningful phrase on them. Fads and sensations tend to grow rapidly on the Internet, because the instant communication facilitates word-of-mouth transmission. Some of them can be funny, some more serious, some thoughtful and inspiring, and others can be downright rude.…

ART114213I just wanted to take this opportunity to mention how grateful I am to be living in the United States of America, the greatest, most perfect society the world has ever known.

I’m truly in awe of how this country has managed to put its mark upon the world.  From the 1600s on, the people of this land have ever been ready to take up arms in the name of a good cause, from defending colonials against indigenous natives who fail to puritan-whippingappreciate the benefits of progress and modernization to traveling across this world’s great oceans in pursuit of news and headlines that strengthen the power and influence of our fourth estate, the ideal embodiment of that most vaunted of rights, the freedom of speech.

It is important to note that while our countrymen shed blood in the name of good causes, we rarely, if ever, allowed ourselves to be distracted by petty political or moral considerations.  …
